The East Coast Throws Academy was formed by brothers, Ryan & Chad Yurchick, when they merged the North Shore Throwers Club with the Allegheny Mountain Throwers Club, which was formed in 2004. The goal of providing some of the best possible instruction to throwers stems from many throwers desiring better coaching in high school.

During his Sophomore year of high school, Chad threw 148'4" and was the diameter of a discus away from qualifying for the Pennsylvania state championship meet. That was enough to convince Ryan to take a break from his own throwing pursuits in order to help his brother reach his goal of becoming a state champion. It worked and he accomplished his goal...TWICE. Throwers from around the area began to take an interest in training with us and this led to the formation of a throwers club. The most fun part of this was that we were able to train in the throwing circle and basketball court in our backyard. Our parents were generous enough to allow us to turn their garage into a "training center" and a place to collect throwing implements, such as disc brake rotors, chains, tires, and homemade medicine balls.

A lot of what we are able to accomplish is because of the support we get from members of our families and communities. We travel as a group to summer competitions and get together to practice as often as three times a week throughout the year. We hope you will consider joining us and share the fun of the sport we love!

Ryan was recently the throws coach at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania before stepping away to spend more time with his family. Previously a public school teacher in Massachusetts, he never turns down an opportunity to help local throwers find success. His coaching experience spans from youth clubs to Masters athletes. Has coached multiple national meet qualifiers at the NCAA and high school level, as well as numerous high school state champions in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He has been the throws coach at Lehigh University (2008-2012, 2016-2018), Gordon College (2012-2015), and Merrimack College (2015-2016).

Originally from the very small rural town of Wilcox, Pennsylvania, he attended Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania where, after sampling various college majors, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health & Physical Education. He competed in the discus and added the hammer/weight during his senior year. A frustrating career plagued by a back injury led to modified workouts and never reaching his true potential. It is with this in mind that we emphasize the importance of listening to your body and training properly.

Often called upon by his college coaches to assist with helping his teammates during practices; since the conclusion of his college career in 2011, Chad has continued his coaching career in northwest Pennsylvania. Currently Chad is coaching the throwers at Johnsonburg Area High School and collaborating with area coaches to offer assistance to throwers from the surrounding schools. During the past couple seasons Chad has mentored a New Balance Outdoor National Champion(javelin-212'), PIAA State Champions, and multiple PIAA State Qualifiers and Medal Winners.

Chad was a two-time Pennsylvania State Champion in the discus throw and also qualified for national meets in the hammer and weight throws. His academic and athletic performance garnered recognition from colleges such as Brown University, University of Virginia, and Cornell University; though Bucknell University eventually rose to the top of the list. Departing from Bucknell at the end of his freshman year(due to a change in his field of study and injury) he moved on to Lock Haven University.
